In September I will be working in Mohill, County Leitrim with the Active Age group. I was put in touch with them a few months ago just before they submitted their Creative Communities application. https://www.creativeireland.gov.ie/en/creative-communities/
The Creative Ireland page states;
“Harnessing the creative potential of our people and communities is a cornerstone of the Creative Ireland Programme. In each of the 31 local authorities, the Creative Ireland Programme has established a Culture and Creativity Team which brings together local expertise in arts, heritage, libraries, enterprise and community engagement, to foster collaboration and spark new initiatives.”
I guess this is where I come in. I am one of the many artists and creatives to help bring this aspiration to Mohill. So, along with the 30 other local authorities, Leitrim County Council have created a new five-year Culture and Creativity Strategy 2023–2027 which you can read here. https://www.creativeireland.gov.ie/app/uploads/2019/12/Leitrim-1.pdf
Seriously though, the chance to have fun, play, meet and share stories is what I am most excited about. It’s nothing new to hear someone say that they are not creative in the least. That they can’t draw, make or give any creative insight into pretty much anything. To unpack that belief and to help someone discover who they are creatively in so many different ways is really exciting.
This part of a project or making is often overlooked. The beginning. How we shape the whole thing. The conversations that we begin with. How we navigate and dance around ideas, thoughts and challenges. In itself it is an art piece.
So, here we are with “Adventures in Creative Conversations” . It is a community-driven art project dedicated to fostering creativity, connection, and shared storytelling among older adults in Mohill. Through collaboration, conversation, listening and artistic creation, the project aims to build a “living archive” that celebrates the unique experiences and voices of the community.
The project revolves around the process of research and development, captured through film, recordings, and notes, transforming it into a living art piece. We aim to cultivate a ‘breathable’ approach to our work, incorporating elements of film, sewing, writing, performance, and mixed media, or whatever sparks our creativity.
Spanning several months, this project will encompass research and development, leading to the creation of new works. Our goal is not only to encapsulate the spirit of our community but also to inspire ongoing creativity and connection for years to come.
I will be sharing regular updates and blog posts, and we will also feature guest blogs throughout the journey!
Have a great summer- see you in September
